When Should You Replace an iPhone Battery?
Reviewed by Switch Store Repairs, Harare
An iPhone battery should generally be replaced when its maximum capacity approaches or falls below 80%, iOS displays a “Service” recommendation, or the battery no longer lasts reliably through your normal day. Replace it urgently if the battery is swollen, overheating or pushing the screen away from the frame.
How to check battery health
Find your iPhone’s current capacity
Open Settings → Battery, then select:
- Battery Health on iPhone 15 and newer models.
- Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier models.
The wording may vary slightly depending on your version of iOS. Look at Maximum Capacity. This compares the battery’s current capacity with what it could hold when it was new.
For example, 79% maximum capacity means the battery can now hold approximately 79% of its original charge under comparable conditions.
Six signs that your battery needs replacing
1. Battery health is around or below 80%
The 80% figure is a useful service benchmark, but it is not a countdown to sudden failure. An iPhone can continue working below 80%, although shorter battery life and performance problems become more likely.
Apple states that batteries in iPhone 14 and earlier models are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. iPhone 15 and newer batteries are designed to reach that point after 1,000 cycles. Actual results depend on usage, charging habits and temperature. Apple’s battery guidance
Consider replacement when battery health reaches 80–85% if the shorter runtime is already disrupting your day.
2. Your iPhone displays “Service”
If Service appears beside Battery Health, iOS has detected significant battery degradation. Apple recommends considering battery replacement at this point to restore capacity and, where battery ageing has affected it, peak performance. Apple Support
3. The battery drains unusually quickly
A worn battery may fall from 100% to 50% after only a few hours of ordinary use. You might also find yourself charging several times a day despite not changing how you use the phone.
Rapid drain is not always caused by the battery. Before replacing it, check Settings → Battery for:
- Apps using unusually high power
- Heavy background activity
- High screen brightness
- Weak mobile-network signal
- Recent software updates
- Extended camera, gaming or navigation use
If battery health is poor and no application explains the drain, replacement is usually the practical next step.
4. The iPhone shuts down unexpectedly
An ageing battery may be unable to supply the power required during demanding tasks. The iPhone might switch off while taking photos, using mobile data or opening a power-intensive application—even when charge remains.
iOS may apply performance management after an unexpected shutdown. Battery replacement can restore normal performance when the degraded battery is the cause.
5. Performance becomes inconsistent
Possible battery-related symptoms include:
- Apps taking longer to open
- Reduced frame rates
- Lower speaker volume
- The screen becoming dimmer
- Slow processing during demanding tasks
- Frequent performance-management messages
These symptoms can also have software or hardware causes. A proper diagnostic check should be completed before assuming the battery is responsible.
Urgent safety warning
6. The battery is swollen or overheating
A swollen battery can push the display away from the frame, create a gap along the phone’s edge or cause the screen to lift. If you notice swelling:
- Stop charging the iPhone.
- Avoid pressing the screen back into place.
- Do not puncture, bend or remove the battery yourself.
- Stop using the device and arrange professional inspection promptly.
A damaged lithium-ion battery can overheat and cause injury or fire. Apple advises stopping use if you suspect that the iPhone or its battery is damaged. Apple safety guidance
Should you replace a battery at 85% health?
Not automatically.
If the phone still lasts comfortably through your day and does not shut down unexpectedly, you can normally continue using it. Battery replacement becomes worthwhile when the declining capacity creates a real inconvenience—not simply because the percentage is below 100%.
A business user who depends on their iPhone throughout the day may choose replacement at 85%. A lighter user may remain comfortable below 80%.
Will a new battery make an iPhone faster?
A replacement battery can improve performance if iOS has reduced peak performance because the old battery cannot supply sufficient power. It will not solve unrelated problems such as:
- Insufficient storage
- Software faults
- A damaged charging port
- Overheating caused by another component
- Poor mobile-network performance
- An outdated application
Diagnostics should confirm the cause before the battery is replaced.
Is replacing the battery better than buying another iPhone?
Battery replacement is often worthwhile when:
- The display, cameras and Face ID still work properly
- The iPhone continues receiving the software support you need
- You are satisfied with its overall performance
- The replacement costs much less than upgrading
Consider replacing or trading in the phone when it has several expensive faults, serious liquid damage or no longer meets your storage and performance requirements.
What should you ask before approving a battery replacement?
Ask the repair provider:
- What type and grade of battery will be installed?
- Is the quoted price final after diagnostics?
- Will Battery Health continue displaying correctly?
- Could Parts and Service History show a message?
- What testing is performed after installation?
- What does the repair warranty cover?
On supported iPhones, battery-repair information may appear under Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History. Apple explains that an “Unknown” message can appear when a battery is non-genuine, unverified, modified or not functioning as expected. Apple Parts and Service History
